Frequently Asked Questions

What are specialist schools, and how are they different from mainstream schools?

Specialist schools provide tailored support and education by experienced specialist teachers and therapy staff that meets students’ unique abilities and challenges.

Who can attend a specialist school?

Specialist schools are designed for students with significant learning needs, typically those who are ORS (Ongoing Resourcing Scheme) funded.

What is the ORS (Ongoing Resourcing Scheme) funding, and how does it work?

ORS funding provides additional support for students with high needs, enabling access to resources, specialist staff, and support services essential for their learning. Eligibility is determined by the Ministry of Education based on a set of criteria that assess the child’s unique needs.

To find out more, visit the Ministry of Educations website here.

How do I know if my child qualifies for enrolment in a specialist school?

Children with high or very high learning needs may qualify. This is often identified by the Ministry of Education through the ORS application process. If your child requires support beyond what your local mainstream school can provide, a specialist school may be an option. We recommend discussing this with your child’s current school or contacting a specialist school directly for guidance.

What if my child doesn’t have ORS funding?

If your child isn’t currently ORS-funded, the specialist school can advise you on how to apply and guide you through the process. While not typical, some schools may allow learners without ORS funding to enrol.

How do I apply for my child to attend a specialist school?

Applications are typically made through the Ministry of Education in partnership with your child’s current school or a specialist school near you. For more information, read out How to Enrol guide.

Are there fees associated with attending a specialist school?

Specialist schools are publicly funded schools much like local mainstream schools. There may be some fees for different activities so it’s best to check directly with the school regarding any associated costs.

What if there isn’t space available at the school?

Some specialist schools offer outreach services to students in local mainstream schools. This service can provide specialised support to a student and their current school if immediate enrolment isn’t available. Generally the local mainstream school contacts their local specialist school to apply for the Outreach Service (STOS) for an ORS funded student who attends their school.

Can children transition back to mainstream schools from a specialist school?

Yes, children can transition back to their local mainstream school. Specialist schools will support students, whānau, parents and caregivers and their local mainstream school to ensure a smooth process.
